Cononley Gib and Pinhaw Beacon 28.4.12

9.8 miles, 3-4 hours.

The day had started off with pretty awful weather really for the back end of April, heavy wintry rain in the morning leaving a grey, cold, and windy afternoon. I had drawn up this route for a quick hike around this section of Airedale taking in two Trig Points, the final one being on the highest point of the route.

My walk started at the village of Cononley. Here, walking the road from the Railway Station through the village, past the old houses...

Going off road now, and quickly ascending high above the village...
Cutting off from the main path - in order to bag the Trig Point that didn't look to far away according to my GPS, this old chimney then came into view...
Seemingly part of the old Cononley Lead Mine, this old smelting chimney is still connected by a tunnel...
Some good views from the base of the chimney too...
On now towards the Trig...
I had to scale two dry stone walls to get to this, and just as many to descend the hill aswell. But here it is, Cononley Gib summit Trig Point at 275 metres...
A distant Boulsworth Hill in the gloom...
A bit of road walking now, here heading North West...
Heading towards Hewitts Farm across this pasture...
With it not being marked down on the map, this surprised me that this path is the Pennine Way...

A sign displaying a warning about Adders was around here somewhere, but throwing caution to the cold wind I pressed on across the moor...

Views towards last weeks hike, Pendle Hill...
Heading towards the Trig Point now...
Pinhaw Beacon summit Trig Point and cairn at 388 metres...
Looking back at Pinhaw Beacon on the descent, heading now towards Stanrise Plantation, along with a very distant, and with my camera, almost impossible to see Ingleborough...
 Along side the plantation now...
And now heading into the trees, a welcome break from the harsh wind...
Back onto the road again at the edge of Carleton Moor...
A contradiction of miles, from the old to the modern. A difference of three miles!...
 Heading back towards Cononley now...
Getting told off by a Lapwing...
Heading past Street Head across Cononley Moor...
And finally back into the bustling metropolis that is Cononley...
A good little walk from Cononley, with some excellent views of the surrounding moors and hills. Thanks for reading.

Hi Steve, back again :- In pursuance of an act of Parliament in the eighth and ninth years of King William,it ordered that for the conveniance of travellers on roads remote from the towns where two or more highways cross there should be erected a stone with inscribed on, The next market town to which the the highway leads.
This order was repeated in1733 and again in1738 and that on each guide post the name of the next market town and how far the distance is.
At the time a customary mile was in use which was longer than the statute mile,by an amount varying from one third to one half.
cheers Danny

Hi Danny, many thanks for your comments! The way marker was an interesting point, that would give meaning to a 'country mile'. A nice part of the world around those parts, I will return again some time soon.
Thanks for pointing out the problems with my page. I've been having some serious problems with it, and Ive had no feedback from Google to help fix it. This latest blog took a long time to upload, with many problems and Ive noticed that some pictures have disappeared since I uploaded it too! So to be honest I'm thinking of pulling the plug on Fell Finder unless I can resolve the issues soon.
Cheers Steve.
